ISEP is the Engineering School of Polytechnic Institute of Porto (IPP), and the largest IPP School, with over 6700 students. ISEP detains relevant human and material resources in research and development (R&D), particularly with regard to applied research in Engineering. ISEP has demonstrated its excellence in R&D activities by means of a substantial record of participation in R&D national and international projects and scientific publications that evidence the quality of these activities. GECAD (Research Group on Intelligent Engineering and Computing for Advanced Innovation and Development) is the largest R&D unit of the Polytechnic of Porto, settled in ISEP, and includes over 30 researchers. GECAD has significant knowledge and skills in the application of artificial intelligence techniques to power systems. GECAD has important works regarding multi-agent system platform for electricity market simulation and buildings and smart grid monitoring and management, which can enable sophisticated experiments in both simulated and real scenario. In addition, GECAD has relevant works in intelligence of home; the simulation and management of distributed energy resources in smart grids, including large penetration of electric vehicles and renewable generation. GECAD also has relevant work in development of novel optimization algorithms and machine learning techniques to tackle complex problems for the energy sector.
